Neuropathy
What is Peripheral Neuropathy?
Your peripheral nervous system includes any of the nerves that exist outside of your spinal column and brain, while neuropathy refers to the damage of or malfunction of nerves and their signals. Peripheral neuropathy occurs when the health of your nerves becomes compromised. This could be the result of being cut off from oxygenation and nutrients or being compressed by surrounding tissue, ultimately causing nerve impairment and damage.
Peripheral neuropathy is a condition characterized by the improper function or damage of nerves in the body and affects approximately 50% of adults living with diabetes. You don’t have to be diabetic to suffer from neuropathy, but the two conditions are often closely linked. Consistently high blood sugar levels lead to damage of the blood vessels that supply the nerves with oxygen and nutrients. This effect begins to compound as you become more overweight. The severity of the symptoms depends on your age, weight, and how advanced your condition is.
What Causes Neuropathy
Acquired neuropathies are caused by environmental factors such as toxins, trauma, illness, or infection. Known causes of acquired neuropathies include:
- Diabetes
- Genetic diseases
- Alcoholism
- Malnutrition
- Cancer
- Reaction to chemotherapy
- Auto-immune conditions that target the nerves
- Specific medications
- Kidney or thyroid disease
- Infections such as Lyme disease, shingles, or AIDS
Symptoms
Your symptoms may differ depending on the type of neuropathy you are experiencing, however, the underlying commonality will be numbness, pain, and possible loss of function. Symptoms of neuropathy include:
- Gradual onset of numbness or tingling sensations in the hands, arms, feet, or legs
- Sharp, pulsating or burning pain
- Extreme sensitivity to touch
- Lack of coordination or balance
- Muscle weakness and fatigue
- Feeling as if you're wearing gloves or socks when you're not
- Possible paralysis if motor nerves are affected
If autonomic nerves are affected, signs and symptoms might include:
- Digestive issues
- Changes in blood pressure, causing dizziness
- Heat intolerance
Stem Cells and Peripheral Neuropathy
Currently, the traditional therapeutic options for peripheral neuropathy include medications and surgery. Most procedures and treatments are aimed at the management of resulting pain. Often, these involve lifestyle changes to help patients better manage their condition on a daily basis. No matter the severity, it is a progressive condition. Meaning, your neuropathy can get worse if left unmanaged.
Stem cells are revolutionizing our understanding of how to combat disease. These cells can differentiate into many different cell types whose DNA hasn’t been blocked or preset to be only one type of cell. This means that this DNA can express miRNAs that can target more than one cell. In this way, they may act as a healing agent that can reverse damage caused by a condition and replenish cells that are lost.
Research has shown that pluripotent stem cells may have the ability to boost the growth of nerve fibers and support the recovery of nerve function. In a study conducted to determine the therapeutic potential of iPSCs in neural regeneration, iPSCs showed to regenerate peripheral nerves.
